What this involves
Halloween is the one night a year when fake cobwebs belong on the ceiling and candy wrappers on the floor. The problem arrives the next morning, when those same decorations look a lot less festive and a lot more like a job.
This guide walks through the Halloween party aftermath room by room — what to tackle first, which stains need immediate attention, and where a little prep the night before saves you two hours the day after. If the party got away from you, professional house cleaning is always an option. But if you want to handle it yourself, here's where to start.
Start with the Floors — Every Time
Floors take the most punishment at a party, and clearing them first makes every other task easier.
Stain Guide
The Four Stains Halloween Actually Produces
Fake Blood
Theatrical fake blood is usually corn syrup and red food dye. Cold water first — heat sets the dye. Dish soap on fabric, then blot repeatedly. On hard surfaces, it wipes clean while wet and scrubs off dry.
Pumpkin
Pumpkin flesh and juice leave an orange residue that stains if it dries. Scoop up any solids first, then clean with warm soapy water on hard surfaces. On fabric or carpet, cold water and dish soap before it sets.
Candle Wax
Let it harden completely before you touch it. Once solid, flex the fabric to crack the wax and scrape with a dull edge. For anything remaining, place a paper bag over it and press with a warm iron — the wax absorbs into the bag.
Chocolate and Candy
Chocolate smears get worse when warm. Refrigerate the area if possible, let it firm up, then scrape gently. Dish soap and cold water for any residue. Hard candy that melted into a surface needs warm water to dissolve before wiping.
Take Down Decorations in the Right Order
- 01
Remove anything hung with tape or adhesive first
Tape pulls paint if it's been up more than a day or two. Warm it with a hair dryer for a few seconds before peeling — it releases without taking finish with it.
- 02
Roll up fake cobwebs before vacuuming
Synthetic cobweb material gets shredded by a vacuum and wraps around the brush roll. Pull it down by hand and bag it before you run the vacuum.
- 03
Clear flat surfaces before wiping them
Pumpkins, candle holders, and centerpieces move to one spot before you wipe down tables and counters. Cleaning around obstacles just moves the dust.
- 04
Wipe down walls and baseboards last
Anything that splashed — drinks, food, aerosol silly string — hits walls more than people expect. A damp cloth along the baseboards and a spot-check of the wall behind the food table will catch what the floor sweep missed.

Our Process
What to Prep the Night Before the Party
A little setup before guests arrive cuts the cleanup time nearly in half.
- 01
Cover high-traffic surfaces
Tablecloths, plastic sheeting on outdoor furniture, and a rug runner in the entryway catch most of what would otherwise go directly onto your floors and furniture. They peel off at the end of the night.
- 02
Set out extra trash bins
One trash can is never enough for a party. Put a small bin in every room guests will use, lined and ready. People throw things away where they're standing — give them somewhere to do it.
- 03
Keep a stain kit accessible
A small basket with paper towels, club soda, dish soap, and a clean cloth takes thirty seconds to put together. Spills treated within the first two minutes rarely become stains.
